Half Mermaid Journal

Edition 1

Quotes we loved:

"When anxious, uneasy, and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused."

Rainer Maria Rilke

“Journal writing is a voyage to the interior.”

Christina Baldwin

Journaling question we are pondering:

What do you love about being in the water and what is one way in which this practice has changed you?

(explore with as much detail as possible).

This week’s blog post:

The power of open water and journaling

I have been a swimmer most of my life, but when I say again, I mean I was finally ready for the water to teach me. To teach me how to be present, connected and remind me what it is like to feel again

Journal update:

We are so excited. We have been working to make a beautiful, uniquely designed journal, for all the lovers of the open water around the world. What makes this journal special?

  • Beautifully designed with the highest quality materials.

  • Provides journaling guidance, 100 plus pages to capture your swimming experiences and 7 retrospective pages for to reflect on your journey over time. There is space for freestyle journaling and to capture things like water temperature, moon cycle, location, conditions and much more.

  • Eco friendly! No trees were harmed in the making of this journal. It is made of stone paper and has a faux leather cover! Which means it is water and tear proof! Perfect for swimmers and those who love being in the water.

The prototype is ready! We are gearing up to launch our Kickstarter campaign to produce and ship the journal to you.

One new thing we learnt this week:

A clinical trial conducted in March 2000 and published in Pub Med measured physiological responses to water immersion at different temperatures for the duration on one hour. When immersed in water 14 degrees celsius or lower, the study found that the metabolic rate of participants increased by 350% and dopamine concentrations increased 250% ! As the dopamine hormone plays a leading role in the pleasure, satisfaction and reward process, no wonder all merpeople have the biggest smiles when they walk out of the water.

Products we are loving:

As we approach winter in the southern hemisphere the days are contracting and daylight savings means the mornings are dark. Light does not start to filter through till about 7am.

This is the time my tow buoy comes in handy. Whilst it’s handy for its storage pouch, keeping my keys dry whilst I swim, what I value the most is that it becomes a little beacon of light and therefore a safety device. I keep a waterproof torch I can turn on which means I can be seen better by others, including boats, and I can see my swim buddies better too.

It is also makes for a very comfortable pillow

What we are listening to:

The “Roll With The Punches” podcast by Tiffanee Cook, in her trilogy interview of Ashleigh Webb, in episodes 600, 601 and 646.

What an incredible conversation! A candid, open, honest discussion about life and deep insights about things that really matter. Ashleigh shares her personal story and struggles, her relationship with the water and swimming, the all consuming undertaking of swimming the English Channel for a heart warming cause. I loved the conversation and hope you do too.
